Position Overview
We are seeking Model Makers at multiple levels to support the Training Aid Production Center (TAPC) at the Fort Irwin TSC. These positions design, fabricate, repair, and modify training aids and VISMODs that replicate realistic battlefield environments for rotational units.[2]

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build training devices and models from customer concepts, sketches, blueprints, or technical data, using wood, metal, plastics, composites, foam, and fabric.[2]
  • Repair and refurbish existing devices and VISMODs, including structural repairs, repainting, hardware replacement, and integration of simple electrical or electronic components.[2]
  • Safely operate a wide range of shop tools and equipment (saws, welders, sanders, routers, spray equipment) in accordance with site safety and environmental requirements.[2]
  • Develop and maintain technical data packages, parts lists, and “picture books” for locally fabricated devices; support accountability and inventory of all fabricated property.[2]
  • Coordinate with TSC and unit personnel to refine design requirements and ensure products meet training objectives and PWS standards.[2]

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated skill in carpentry, fabrication, model making, or similar trades.
  • Ability to read blueprints and sketches; strong spatial and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to lift/move materials and work safely around tools, paints, adhesives, and solvents.[2]

Level Differentiation

  • Model Maker I: Entry/intermediate; performs routine fabrication and repair tasks.
  • Model Maker II: Journeyman; handles more complex projects with limited oversight.
  • Model Maker III: Senior; leads complex designs, mentors junior personnel, and coordinates with customers on technical solutions.[3]

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly base wage in accordance with the Teamsters Local 166 wage schedule for Model Maker I/II/III, plus benefits.[5][3]
